Bruce Whipple was a strong two-sport athlete during his time at Wheaton as a football and basketball player. As a quarterback on the football team, Bruce threw for over 100 yards and connected on 15 touchdown passes in his career while helping the Crusaders win three-straight CCI football championships. As a sophomore, Whipple was named first team All-CCI as the Crusaders rolled to an undefeated 8-0 record. Bruce served as football captain during his senior season. “Bruce had to be the premier quarterback of that era,” said head football coach Harve Chrouser, “…He could throw the long pass well, he was a good runner and he was a fantastic defensive player too. He could do it all.”
On the basketball court, Bruce was a starter for two seasons and team captain as a senior. “Bruce was not a high scorer himself,” remembers his coach Lee Pfund, “but he played on a team of high scorers and did his job of rebounding and playing defense well.”
