Bill Gerig was instrumental in the basketball team’s success during the late 1950s, helping the team to a 106-12 record over his four seasons. As a freshman, Gerig was the sixth man on a team that went 28-4 and finished fourth in the NAIA national championship. His sophomore year, he played aggressive defense, and his outside shooting helped the team to a 28-1 record and the NCAA college division national championship. In 1957-58, the 5-foot-11 guard garnered first team All-CCI honors as he led Wheaton to a 27-3 record and a third-place finish in the NCAA national tournament. As a senior, Bill captained the team and again was All-Conference for the 23-4 Crusaders.
Gerig also played four years of tennis and was team captain his senior year.
