The 1955-56 Men’s Basketball team accomplished much during their season including a 27-4 mark, an undefeated 14-0 CCI season and a 4th place finish in the NAIA National Tournament. The Crusaders dropped the season’s second game to Beloit and didn’t lose again in the regular season, a string of 24 consecutive wins. Wheaton went on to win 56 consecutive CCI games from 1955 to 1959. The CCI coaches selected center Jerry Trauz and guard Tom Young to the All-CCI First Team and forwards Jerry Miller and Don Hudgens to the Second Team. Traux also earned Helms All-America First Team honors averaging 16.8 points. Coach Lee Pfund was named NAIA District 20 Coach of the Year.
Wheaton received a bid to the NAIA National Tournament in Kansas City despite losing in the state NAIA Tournament. At the National Tournament, Wheaton gained wins over Kalamazoo, Stephen F. Austin State and Gustavus Adolphus to reach the final four. Texas Southern derailed Wheaton’s title hopes with an 85-82 win in the semifinals and Pittsburg State of Kansas won the third-place game 77-70.
