The 1951 Wheaton Crusader Baseball team accomplished something no other Wheaton baseball team has accomplished - it won a CCI championship. Coached by Lee Pfund, Wheaton parlayed outstanding pitching, timely hitting and solid defense into a 12-6-1 record, including eight wins in nine CCI games. Richard Messner, who later went on to pitch in the minor leagues for the New York Giants organization, led the team with a .375 batting average and in strikeouts. The team included five Hall of Honor inductees: Ed Davies; Jack Lockhart; Dick Parramore; Messner; and Pfund, Wheaton’s all-time winningest basketball and baseball coach. The rest of the roster included Whitey Ruutila; team captain Fred Wren; Bill Bell; Bruce Benson; Charles Kennedy; Jim Larson; Ken Nissen; Bruce Pope; Richard Stuber; Don Wehling; and Jim White.
