Brief History
The construction of Cantigny Golf began in 1986 and was completed in 1988. The golf course opened for play in the spring of 1989. The course was designed by Roger Packard and the construction was completed by the Wadsworth Construction Company. In 2003, the course was updated by Jacobson Golf Course Design.
Golfers have been known to give up private club memberships to become regulars at Cantigny Golf & Tennis in Wheaton, one of a generation of courses that opened in the late 1980s when waiting lists to join country clubs stretched for years in a humming economy.
Named the No. 1 new public course in the nation by Golf Digest magazine in 1989, Cantigny (pronounced "can-tee-nee") is still the benchmark against which public club amenities are measured.
In their navy blue plus fours, the genial staff is better dressed than the neatest Bobby Jones-clad members at most private facilities. There's a well-tuned caddie program — exceedingly rare in public venues.
The 27-hole course itself was conceived by Wisconsin golf architect Roger Packard out of 250 pristine, heavily wooded acres and named for the site of a key battle in France during World War I. With towering oaks and sycamores, undulating streams and lakes, Cantigny stands in stark contrast to most of the dull cornfield tracts that were built around the same time.
It's also old school. Golfers can walk and carry their own bags any day of the week. There is little white-staked out-of-bounds to worry about, and Global Positioning System monitors are conspicuously absent from the electric carts. You figure your own yardage here.
