Registration open for 2013 summer camps

Wheaton, Ill. - Registration for the Wheaton College Athletics Department summer camps are now open for summer of 2013 with the return of basketball, soccer, wrestling and tennis camps.

The summer camps serve to teach game skills, with a Christian perspective of character development. Each camp is run by the Wheaton College head coaches and staffs of the respective sports.

Wheaton head men's basketball coach Mike Schauer will be the camp director for the 47th annual Wheaton College Basketball Camp. Over 10,000 young men and women have attended the camp over the years and the camp places emphasis on the teaching of the fundamentals of the game and the teaching of character development.

The residential camp for boys in grades 6-9 is from June 17-20 and the day camp for boys and girls in grades 6-9 is scheduled for June 24-28. There are also additional camps for boys and girls in grades 1-5 from June 17-21 and again on June 24-28.

The tennis camp, in its fifth year, will be run by Wheaton College head men's tennis coach Brad Pihl, who will be assisted by members of the men's tennis team. Pihl has 15 years of teaching experience and works with all levels, from top-ranked juniors to complete beginners. There are six weeks of the co-ed camp to choose from: June 10-14, June 17-21, June 24-28, July 8-12, July 15-19 and July 22-26.

The Beginner-Intermediate Tennis Camp is for ages 9-14 and will be held from 9 AM – 10:30 AM daily. The Advanced Tennis Camp is for ages 13-18 and goes from 10:30 AM – 12:30 PM daily.

Wrestling camp will enter its third year under Wheaton head wrestling coach Jim Gruenwald. Gruenwald, in his fourth year at Wheaton, was a two-time member of the U.S. Olympic Greco-Roman wrestling team. He finished sixth at 60 kg at the 2000 Olympics in Sydney and was 10th at the 2004 Olympics in Athens. A three-time U.S. Champion, Gruenwald completed his competitive career in 2008 as a National Champion, and also won titles in 2003 and 2004.

The wrestling camps will be geared towards grades 1-6 and grades 7-12. Both grade groups will occur simultaneously on June 11-14 and July 15-19 (10 AM - 3:30 PM daily).

Wheaton men's soccer will be putting on four soccer academies this summer. The Wheaton College Elite Soccer Academy is a two-day overnight elite camp for grades 9-12 boys that runs on June 27-28 and July 12-13. The Wheaton College Soccer Academy is a five-day camp for grades 3-8 that is scheduled for June 24-28 and July 8-12.
