Orange, Calif. - The Wheaton softball team swept a pair of games on Friday in its final day of action at the Sunwest Tournament. Wheaton (6-4) defeated Suffolk University 5-2 in the opening game of the day for the Thunder and Wheaton closed out its participation in the tournament with a 19-0 victory against Penn State-Abington. Wheaton will return to Illinois for its next, game a 3 PM doubleheader on March 17 at Concordia University-Chicago.
In the victory against Suffolk, Wheaton scored five runs, on eight hits, with no errors and Suffolk plated two runs, on four hits, with no errors. Sophomore
Ainsley McCullough tossed a complete game to earn the victory and improve her record to 4-1 on the year. McCullough allowed two earned runs, on seven hits, with nine strikeouts and two walks. Junior
Katie Iser was 2-for-3, with a run scored.
Lauren Griffith hit a double and scored a run for the 'Orange and Blue'.
Wheaton took an early lead with three runs in the bottom of the first inning.
Adrienne Munoz and Iser hit back-to-back singles to open the inning and
Christine Williams hit a sacrifice fly to drive in Munoz.
Amanda Mattocks followed with a RBI-single that brought Iser home and in the next at-bat
Megan Chrans hit a RBI-double to leftfield to account for Wheaton's 3-0 lead.
Suffolk scored a run in the top of the second inning to cut Wheaton's lead to 3-1 and added another run in the top of the fifth inning to trim the Thunder advantage to 3-2. Wheaton scored a run in the bottom of the fifth inning as Mattocks hit a sacrifice fly to drive in Munoz who had drawn a walk earlier in the inning. The final score of 5-2 was a result of a sacrifice fly by
Lesley Guenard that brought
Lauren Griffith home. Griffith hit a double to left centerfield to open the top of the sixth inning.
Wheaton closed out the tournament with a 19-0 victory against Penn State-Abington. Wheaton scored 19 runs, on 15 hits, with no errors and PSU-Abington plated no runs, on one hit, with three errors. Thunder freshman
Elizabeth Perez picked up her first collegiate victory in five innings in the circle. She held PSU-Abington scoreless on just one hit, with two strikeouts.
Chrans was 4-for-5, with a double as she scored three runs and had three RBI. Mattocks was 3-for-3, with three RBI and two runs scored. Munoz was 2-for-4, with five RBI as she hit a home run and a double. Guenard and
Suzanne Teuben each collected two hits in the victory.
