Men's golf competes at the Coca Cola Intercollegiate; Dan Downey is fifth

Fort Stewart, Ga. – The Wheaton men's golf team opened its spring schedule this weekend with the three-round Coca Cola Intercollegiate on Friday and Saturday. The first 36 holes of the tournament were contested on Friday and the final 18 holes were played in the third and final round on Saturday.

University of Texas at Tyler won the event with a three-day total of 883 strokes. Christopher Newport shot a 910 in second, Ohio Wesleyan took third with 914, Lehigh University carded a 923 in fourth place, Bryant University and Savannah College of Art & Design tied for fifth place with 929 strokes, Wheaton was seventh with a three-round total of 930, Transylvania shot a 939 in eighth place, Savannah State carded a 947 in ninth place and Wesley shot 951 in 10th place. Wheaton was accessed a three-stroke penalty on Saturday by a tournament official. Without the penalty Wheaton would have tallied a 927 in fifth place.

Joey Rippel and Jacob Walsh of UT-Tyler won the event as each player shot a 216. The Top individual for the Thunder was Dan Downey who shot a three-round total of 224 in fifth place.

Downey shot a 69 in the opening round, carded a 74 in round two and in Saturday's third round he shot an 81 for a three-round total of 224.

Bryan Sandvig paired a 79 in the first round, with a 76 in the second round and a 79 in the third round for a 234. Freshman Jonny Tink carded a 237 with a 78 in the first round, a 77 in the second round and an 82 on Saturday. Bobby Tunberg finished the tournament on Saturday with an 82 as he shot a 240 over the three rounds. Greg Richardson shot an 83 in each of the first two rounds and he carded a team-best 77 on Saturday as he tallied a three-round total of 243.

Six Wheaton golfers competed as individuals. Freshman Ben Meyer shot a 234 (77-76-81) and Steven Moore carded a 238 (76-83-79). Junior Chase Yacko tallied a 242 (79-81-82) and Freshman Ryan Augustine tallied a 238 (81-84-79). Freshman Ben Souders tallied 251 (82-82-87) and Sam McHale shot a 272 (89-97-86).
