Wheaton swimmers defeat Illinois Wesleyan and North Central in dual meets

Wheaton, Ill. - The Wheaton College men's and women's swim teams each got victories over visiting Illinois Wesleyan University and North Central College in a double dual meet on Saturday.

The Thunder men beat the Titans 163-90 in points while the Thunder women bested IWU 157-104 and the Cardinals 170-48. The IWU women also topped NCC 184-44.

On the men's side, Wheaton picked up 11 event victories. Preston Conger put up a personal record times in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:13.39) and in a win in the 200-yard butterfly (1:55.88). Andrew Painter also won multiple events  in the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:18.00) and the 200-yard backstroke (1:59.91).

In the diving portion, Derek Meadows won the men's one-meter diving with the fifth-best score in Wheaton history with 228 points.

Other Wheaton men's individual victories included Ben Bader in the 500-yard freestyle (4:55.44), Jacob Fuhrman in the 100-yard backstroke (56.50), Michael Schemenaur in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:02.33), Jonathan Nitz in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:20.16) and AJ Provonsha in the 100-yard butterfly (55.33).

Both relays also got wins as the 200-yard freestyle relay team (Matthew Gallagher, Daniel Nahigian, Conger, Provonsha) won in 1:27.26 while the 200-yard medley relay team (Conger, Nitz, Gallagher, Nahigian) was victorious in 1:35.97.

On the women's side, the Thunder picked up nine event wins. Moire Yue made an NCAA B cut in leading off 200-yard freestyle relay in 24.04 for her 50-yard leg. She also won the 100-yard butterfly in 59.18.

Lauren Jurgens was a multi-event winner in the distance races - the 500-yard freestyle (5:10.07) and the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:37.21).

Other individual winners included Heather Crockett in the 50-yard freestyle (25.33), Noelle Hoffer in the 100-yard backstroke (1:01.44), Kelsey Craggett in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:30.12) and Leah Loefstedt in the 200-yard freestyle (2:00.83).

Both relay teams also took first place. The 200-yard freestyle relay team of Yue, Craggett, Bethany Jacobs and Liz Hartman finished in 1:38.10 while the 200-yard medley relay team of Hoffer, Hartman, Crockett and Yue finished in 1:50.58.

The Wheaton swimmers return to action at 4:00 PM on Feb. 11 with a dual meet at North Central College.
