Men's golf finishes fifth at season opening Lou Collins Memorial Tournament

- The Wheaton College men's golf team started off the fall season with a fifth place finish at the two-day Olivet College Lou Collins Memorial Tournament on Saturday.

The par-71 Bedford Valley Country Club was the site for the Wheaton men's first tournament of the year. Indiana Wesleyan University won the team title in the 16-team field with a score of 580. They are followed by Madonna University 583, Olivet College 607, Albion College 607, Wheaton College 609, Owens CC 610, Trine University 612, Hope College 612, Calvin College 614, Spring Arbor University 614, Adrian College 616, Calvin B team 624, Aquinas College 639, Owens B team 648, Olivet B team 649and Hope B team 677.

The individual medalist for the tournament was Jimmy Velmen of Madonna, who shot 72-70 for a 142 total.

Wheaton shot 301 on Friday and 308 on Saturday to finish in fifth place as a team. Greg Richardson was the top finisher with a tie for 12th (72-77-149) in the field of 83 players. Chase Yacko shot 73-79-152 to tie for 21st along with teammate Dan Downey (78-74-152).

Also for the Thunder, Bryan Sandvig carded 78-78-156 while Steven Moore rounded out the scoring with an 82-85-167. Wheaton's individual competitors included Jonny Tink (80-73-153) and Ben Meyer (75-80-155) .
