2010 Wheaton Softball Newcomers

Wheaton, Ill. – The Wheaton College softball program is pleased to announce that the following student-athletes have enrolled for the 2009-2010 academic year and plan on participating as freshmen on the Thunder softball team in the spring of 2009.

Lauren Griffith (3B/OF) Midway High School, (Lott, Texas)
Lauren was named Third team All-State by the Texas Sports Writer's Association in 2008. That year Lauren also played for the Round Rock Blaze where she batted fourth on the team that finished 25th at Gold Nationals in Oklahoma City. Other high school accomplishments include: 2006-2008 First Team All District; 2008 First Team Super Centex; 2008 State Semi-finalist (Texas 4A).

Wheaton Thunder Head Coach Chris Hudson comments, “Lauren has a fast bat and consistently bats .400 against the best competition. She brings a strong arm and a lot of defensive strength. I expect Lauren to contribute to the Thunder program from day one.”

Elizabeth Perez (1B/P/OF) Calvary Chapel (Moreno Valley, Calif.)
Elizabeth Perez brings another left-handed hitter to the Thunder lineup and will be the second lefty pitcher to join the Thunder in the last ten yea rs. In the circle her senior season, she's posted an 14-5 record, striking out 155 batters in 111 innings. Elizabeth hit .571 her junior year of high school and .557 her senior season. After the 2009 season, Elizabeth was named Second Team All-CIF. She has played club softball for the California Thunder, The Next Level, and California Cruisers.

Coach Hudson mentions: “Elizabeth frustrates opponents because she can slap or hit away from the left side. I'm confident her offensive production is going to translate well at the college level. And we're also excited to see what she can do at the college level as a pitcher. The lefty look could give us a good option in the circle.”

Danielle Schmidt (P/OF) New Life Academy (Cottage Grove, Minn.)
Danielle led her high school team to the state championship in 2008 and 2009 earning All-Conference and All-State honors four times (2006, 2007, 2008, and 2009). During the 2009 season Danielle had posted a 18-5 record and struck out 316 batters in 156 innings. A three-sport athlete in high school, Danielle had 1000 career assists in volleyball as a setter, 1100 points in basketball and 1200 strike outs in softball. Danielle also pitches for the Minnesota Blizzard—one of the premier club teams in the state.

“Danielle set a state record by striking out 55 batters during this year's state tournament," comments Hudson, "And while she has had tremendous success at the high school level, I'm most struck by her competitive drive. That trait should serve her very well as she transitions to college ball.”

Suzanne Teuben (C/3B/OF) Villa Park High School (Orange, Calif.)
Suzanne Teuben will add some much needed depth to the Thunder roster with her ability to catch, play third, and the outfield. As a member of the So Cal Elite, Suzanne hit .402 in 2007 and .361 in 2008 while also serving as team captain. She played both outfield and caught for her high school team where she earned “Most Improved Player” honors in 2009.

“Suzanne brings a good work ethic and strong leadership to the team. She's had good success playing in California's Century League and has hit well over .300 against solid travel pitching. We're excited to welcome her to the Wheaton family,” says Hudson.

Wheaton Softball begins the 2009-2010 campaign with tryouts that begin Monday, September 7 at Ruth Leedy Field. For more information, please contact Coach Hudson through Wheaton's Athletic Department.
