Wheaton, Ill. – Five members of the Wheaton baseball team have been recognized with All-College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) accolades as announced by the league's coaches on Monday.
Tim Urbanowicz,
Steve Dennison,
Ryan Miller and
Charlie Antal each received First Team All-CCIW honors, while
Brian Kolb was a Second Team honoree. Wheaton tied its school record for victories this season with 23 wins in a 23-19 record on the year. Wheaton also appeared in the CCIW Tournament for the second time in school history, earning the program's first two conference tournament victories and the team's first appearance in the CCIW Tournament championship round.
Junior pitcher
Tim Urbanowicz earned First Team All-CCIW honors. Urbanowicz is the first Wheaton player to earn All-CCIW recognition at pitcher since
Rob Hamann was a Second Team selection in 1999 and Wheaton's first First Team All-CCIW pick since
Dan Gunn in 1990. Urbanowicz posted an 8-2 record this season, tying Wheaton's single-season record for victories with eight. He compiled a 4.88 ERA in 72 innings of work as he struck out 63 batters. In conference action this season, he was 5-1 in 46-1/2 innings of work with a 4.47 ERA and 41 strikeouts, a mark that was the third-highest strikeout total in league action.
Sophomore
Charlie Antal was a First Team pick in the outfield. Antal hit .324 (48-148) this season, with 43 runs scored and 41 RBI. He belted a school single-season record 11 home runs, with five doubles. In conference action he hit .364 (28-for-77) with 21 RBI. Against conference foes he belted a league-best six home runs, and also recorded CCIW bests with 26 runs scored and 53 total bases
Freshman second baseman
Ryan Miller garnered a First Team All-CCIW infield nod. Miller hit .367 (61-166) in his debut season with the Thunder, for the third-highest single-season hit total in school history with 61. Miller's 13 doubles this year are second on Wheaton's single-season list, scoring 42 runs, with 35 RBI. Miller hit three home runs, with three triples. In conference games Miller hit a team-best .376 (32-85) batting average, with 24 runs scored and 22 RBI. Miller was third in the league in runs driven in, fourth in RBI and his eight doubles against conference foes was second in the CCIW.
Sophomore pitcher/designated hitter/outfielder
Steve Dennison earned First Team All-Conference honors as a utility player. At the plate, Dennison hit .385 (42-109), with 33 RBI and 29 runs scored. He had a team-high .633 slugging percentage, with five home runs, eight doubles and two triples. On the mound he compiled a 3-3 record in 57-1/3 innings of work, with 60 strikeouts and four complete games to his credit. In conference action he hit .371 (26-70) and was second in the conference with five league home runs and third in the league with 49 total bases, posting a .700 slugging percentage in those games. Against CCIW opponents he posted a 2-2 record, with a 4.29 ERA in 35-2/3 innings of work and 34 strikeouts.
Junior shortstop
Brian Kolb was recognized as a Second Team All-CCIW honoree in the infield. The three-time All-CCIW honoree hit a team-best .418 (66-158) this season, compiling the second-highest hit total in school history with 66. Kolb drove in 34 runs this season, scoring 46 times, the second-highest run total in Wheaton history. He drew 25 walks this year, posting a .505 on-base percentage. In conference games the junior hit .364 (28-77), with 24 runs scored, 18 RBI, 17 walks drawn and a .490% on-base percentage. Kolb is Wheaton's career hits leader with 198 career hits, just two shy of becoming the first player in Wheaton history to record 200 career hits.
