St. Paul, Minn. - The Wheaton College water polo team went 1-1 and finished in third place at day two of the Midwest Region Tournament hosted by Macalester College on Saturday.

The Thunder complete their season with a record of 8-15. It makes the third-straight year that Wheaton has finished in third in region.

Carthage defeated Macalester 8-4 in the championship game.

In the morning semifinal, Wheaton lost to Carthage College 11-6. Wheaton played a good first half and led 5-3 at halftime. But Carthage rallied back strong to take the victory.

Jessica McGee and Heather Crockett scored two goals apiece while Emma Higgins and Bethany Jacobs scored one goal each.

In the third-place game, the Thunder beat Colorado College 8-4. Wheaton held a 3-2 lead at halftime and pulled away to secure the victory.

The scores were highlighted by Taylor Clarkson, who scored her first goal ever in three years of competition on the team. Amanda Adams led the way with four goals while the Thunder got one goal each from Hannah Veldt, Higgins and Crockett.

Crockett and Veldt were both named First Team All-Region while Higgins earned Honorable Mention.

Wheaton head coach Jon Lederhouse felt good about the season and his team's continued improvement.

“There was no one team outside of California that we couldn't play with this year,” Lederhouse said. “We played some really good teams like Grove City and Macalester. Our girls were really good, we were just not always consistent. It was a great season. I saw a lot of improvement from the girls this year.”
