St. Paul, Minn. - The Wheaton College water polo team went 1-2 at the first day of the Midwest Region Tournament hosted by Macalester College on Friday.
In the opening match of the morning, Wheaton defeated Carthage College 8-4. The win marked the Thunder's first win in two years against the Lady Reds, and the first time in five tries this season.
Wheaton led 4-3 at halftime and used a strong second half to preserve the victory. Hannah Veldt led all the Thunder scorers with four goals while
Emma Higgins and
Heather Crockett scored two goals each.
In the second match of the day, top-seeded Macalester edged out Wheaton 6-5. The score was tied 3-3 at the half.
Higgins scored three goals in the match while Crockett and Veldt added one goal each.
Wheaton's last match of the night ended with an 8-6 loss to Colorado College. The Tigers held a 5-1 lead at the half.
Crockett scored three goals in the match, with two goals coming from Amanda Adams and one goal from
Bethany Jacobs.
The Midwest Region semifinals begin Saturday, as Wheaton will face Carthage in the 10:00 AM semifinal.
