#8-Ranked Thunder defeats Monmouth 84-53 in Thrivent Financial Tournament consolation game

The Wheaton men's basketball team defeated Monmouth College (Ill.) 84-53 on Wednesday night in the consolation game of the Thrivent Financial Tournament, hosted by California Lutheran University. The Thunder never trailed in tonight's game, building a 44-27 lead at halftime, en route to the 31-point victory.

All-Tournament selection Tim McCrary led the Thunder in scoring for the second-straight night, as he was one of five Thunder players to score in double digits. The sophomore scored 21 points and grabbed nine rebounds, with two steals. Senior Ben Panner scored shot 7-of-9 from the field as he scored 17 points, with three rebounds. Sophomore forward Spencer Schultze (PICTURED RIGHT) came off the Thunder bench to score in double digits for the third consecutive game as he scored 14 points, with three rebounds. Andrew Jahns and John Shackelford each scored 10 points, as both players drained two three-pointers in the game. Jahns also had a game-high six assists.

Michael DeDecker led Monmouth with 14 points and six rebounds. Kendall Cox contributed 13 points, with five rebounds.

Wheaton shot 50.0% (33-66) from the field, with 46.2% (6-13) from three-point range and 70.6% (12-17) at the free throw line. Monmouth posted a 32.7% (17-52) field goal percentage, with 33.3% (4-12) from behind the three-point arc and 60.0% (15-25) at the charity stripe. Wheaton out-rebounded the Scots 41-35, however, the Scots held a 15-12 advantage on the offensive glass.

Wheaton will conclude its three-game trip to California on Saturday with a 7:30 PM (PST) tipoff at Pomona-Pitzer. Saturday's game will be broadcast on WETN radio at 88.1 FM in the Wheaton area and on the internet at www.wetn.org.
