Crawfordsville, Ind. – The Wheaton College women’s swim team took second place while the men’s team took fourth at the Wabash College Patrick Woehnker Invitational over the weekend.
“We had some kids surprise us with how well they did," Wheaton head coach Jon Lederhouse said. "What we’re really working and pointing to is the Wheaton Invitational in two weeks. That is where it’s really going to count. We’re looking for significant improvements by then.”
On the women's side, DePauw University took first with 691 points. They were followed by Wheaton (629), University of Indianapolis (605), Carthage College (443.5) and Rose-Hulman Institute (153.5).
Lauren Jurgens continued her strong season with a win in the 1,650-yard freestyle with a time of 17:33.88. The sophomore won the race by almost a full minute and made a NCAA B cut. Her finish time was 10 seconds faster than her time last year when she won a conference championship in the same event.
Jurgens also had two more top-3 performances, finishing second in the 500-yard freestyle (5:11.48) and third in the 200-yard freestyle (1:58.75).
Liz Hartman won the 200-yard breaststroke (2:28.47) in the building where she holds the pool record that she set last year in the same event. She also took second in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:09.22).
Moire Yue netted a pair of runner-up finishes in the 100-yard backstroke (1:00.65) and the 200-yard IM (2:15.37).
Laura Westfall finished third in the 1,650-yard freestyle in a time of 18:39.26 and also took third in the 500-yard freestyle (5:25.92)
Other Wheaton third-place finishers included
Sloan Skinner in the 400-yard IM (4:52.26) and
Noelle Hoffer in the 200-yard backstroke (2:17.53).
On the men's side, Indianapolis won with a team score of 606. They were followed in order by Carthage (599), DePauw (559.5), Wabash (450.5), Wheaton (334.5) and Rose-Hulman (189).
The top Thunder men finishers were
Jonathan Nitz with a third place in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:00.85) and
Preston Conger's third place in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:17.88).
The Wheaton swim teams return to action in two weeks when the Thunder host the two-day Wheaton Invitational on Dec. 4 and 5.
