Wheaton wins its fifth straight CCIW Women's Tennis Championship

Sophomore Elizabeth Worsowicz won a CCIW Singles Championship for the second straight year

– The Wheaton women's tennis team won four singles titles and two doubles championships this weekend at the 2009 CCIW Women's Tennis Championships to win the CCIW Championship for the fifth consecutive year. Wheaton has won a league best 15 CCIW Championships in women's tennis.

Wheaton scored 72 points in first place. Carthage College finished second with 55 points, North Central took third with 39 points, Augustana was fourth with 26 points, Illinois Wesleyan scored 24 points in fifth, Elmhurst was sixth with five points and Millikin finished in seventh with three points. 


Head coach Jane Nelson noted, “It was a total team effort, starting at the top with our two senior captains. They showed great leadership throughout the fall and specifically during the tournament.” She added, “Everyone in our lineup contributed points to the win, which is vital, given the format of the tournament.”


On Saturday Elizabeth Worsowicz defeated Illinois Wesleyan's Helen Alex 6-1, 6-1 to win the CCIW Championship at number-one singles. Worsowicz advanced to Saturday's championship at number-one singles with a 6-1, 6-2 victory in the semifinal round.  Worsowicz opened up action at number-one singles with a 6-2, 6-0 victory against Virginia Dallman of Elmhurst College. This is the second CCIW Championship for Worsowicz, a sophomore, following a conference title at number-two singles last season as a freshman.

Carthage's Beth Kaufman defeated Wheaton senior Kayli Edwards 6-1, 6-2 for the conference championship at number-two singles on Saturday afternoon. Edwards advanced to the finals with a 6-3, 6-2 victory against Augustana's Tricia Crawford in the semifinals. Edwards opened the tournament with a 6-0, 6-0 victory against Millikin's Michelle Micor in the first round on Friday.

Senior Jill Casserly earned a 6-0, 6-0 victory against Millikin's Raquel Lopez in the first round of action at number-three singles. Casserly topped North Central's Elizabeth Micheletti 6-4, 6-2 in the semifinals.  Carthage's Hollis McPeek defeated Casserly 3-6, 7-5, 7-6 (7-3) on Saturday for the CCIW Championship at number-three singles.

Lindsay Hallett participated in the tournament at number-four singles. Hallett picked up a 6-0, 6-0 victory against Millikin's Alyssa Simmons in the tournament's first round. In the semifinals she defeated Tricia Sapio of Augustana 6-0, 6-0. On Saturday Hallett defeated Kristina Maidicz of Carthage 6-1, 6-0 for the CCIW crown at number-four singles.

Thunder junior Sara Federschmidt had a first-round round by in flight at number-five singles. She won her semifinal match against Augustana's Brittany Reece, 6-2, 6-0 to advance to Saturday's championship round, where she bested Carthage's Ashley Morgan 6-3, 6-0. 

At number-six singles, Wheaton freshman Kirsten Boyer defeated Alissa Goetz of Illinois Wesleyan, 6-1, 6-0 in the first round. Boyer advanced to the championship round with a 6-0, 6-0 victory against Augustana's Krista Panko in the semifinals. Boyer earned a convincing 6-1, 6-0 victory against North Central's Jessica Ignarski for the CCIW Championship at number-six singles on Saturday.

The number-one doubles team of Edwards and Worsowicz opened with a first-round win against Augustana's Tricia Crawford and Jenna Richardson, 6-2, 6-4. In Saturday's semifinals, the duo defeated Liz Exo and Helen Alex of Illinois Wesleyan 6-2, 6-0. Carthage's top doubles team of Gina Klein and Hollis McPeek defeated Edwards and Worsowicz 6-4, 6-2.

The number-two doubles team of Hallett and Boyer received a first round bye. In Saturday's semifinals they defeated Elizabeth Micheletti 6-2, 6-4 and won the conference title with a 6-7 (2-7), 6-1, 7-5 victory against Kristina Naidicz and Beth Kaufman of Carthage in the championship match of the flight.

Casserly and Federschmidt earned a first-round win against the Elmhurst team of Aliexis Ross and Emily Tarlini, 6-0, 6-0 at number-three singles. In the semifinals the Thunder duo earned a 6-1, 6-4 victory against Emily Doemland and Brittany Reece of Augustana. Casserly and Federschmidt won the conference title at their flight with a 6-1, 6-0 win against Abigail Conover and Jessica Ignarski of North Central.
