Rock Island, Ill. – The Wheaton cross country teams competed at the 2008 NCAA Division III Midwest Regional on Saturday afternoon at Saukie Golf Course in Rock Island. The Wheaton women's team finished fourth in a 43-team field to possibly qualify for the Division III Championships next Saturday in Hanover, Indiana. The Wheaton men's team was seventh in the 39-team field, with two runners qualifying for Nationals next weekend.
UW-Eau Claire won the women's race with 108 points, UW-LaCrosse finished second with 115 points, Washington University (Mo.) tallied 117 points in third place, Wheaton scored 130 points in fourth place, UW-Oshkosh was fifth with 146 points and University of Chicago scored 15 8 points in sixth place.
With its fourth-place finish and trip to Nationals, the Wheaton women's program is now position to earn a spot at the Division III Championships as a team for the first time since 1999. The NCAA will announce the participating teams for Nationals on Sunday afternoon.
All-American Lisa Baumert was the top finisher for the Thunder with a time of 21:48.7 on the 6K course to finish fourth. Baumert repeated as an All-Region selection and will return to the Division III Championships, where she finished 31st last year. Senior Brooke Zeller finished 25th in the 292-woman field with a time of 22:50.1. Thunder sophomore Jennifer Parisi posted a time of 22:50.7 in 26th place and junior Hannah Page posted a time of 23:02.6 in 36th place. Sophomore Sara Greeley finished 39th with a time of 23:06.8 and junior Sarah Beasley posted a time of 23:28.2 in 59th place.
Two members of the Thunder men's team qualified for Nationals, with a pair of top-ten finishes. All-American Brandon Mull (PICTURED RIGHT) earned a repeat trip to Nationals by winning the Regional with a time of 24:33.6 on the 8K course. Junior Brian Wurtz (PICTURED LEFT) will be joining Mull at Nationals by posting a time of 25:04.0 to finish in seventh place out of 280 competitors. Freshman Jacob Goertz finished 55th with a time of 26:08.8, senior Andrew Redmann was 79th in 26:39.0 and junior Brendan Murphy posted a time of 26:47.8 in 86th place.
North Central won the men's race with 51 points, UW-LaCrosse scored 64 points in second place, UW-Stevens Point finished third with 83 points, UW-Oshkosh scored 134 points in fourth place, Augustana took fifth with 182 points, UW-Eau Claire tallied 200 points in sixth place, Wheaton was seventh with 228 points, UW-Platteville scored 274 points in eighth place, University of Chicago finished ninth with 291 points and Washington (Mo.) scored 292 points in 10th place.
